SUMMARY
Quatto has crafted himself the most ambitious user-created Unreal map to date. As a rebel, you must free a Keep from an evil warlord, and (oh my!) escape with your life. The level is huge, and yet manages to keep to reasonable render speeds, even on my lowly box. The lay-out is superb, if a bit confusing at times. There is plenty of room for exploration, and some areas which can only be accessed by finding the proper trigger, yet the flow is very linear. There is plenty of nice architecture to admire, and excellent use of colored lighting: the exterior of the main Keep (see pic) in particular. I did lose my grip on exactly where I was, with all of the elevators and varitey of locales. It's hard to picture the totality of the structure you are exploring. Action is quite subdued, though the challenge remains relatively high. Lengthy periods of exploration, without attacks to disrupt, give the player a real feeling of exploration and discovery, plus a bit of mystery provided by the Translator messages and the selected music. The story, though simple, is revealed well, and opens sequentially through the discovery of various journals, and signs on the walls. Another big plus is the use a of Nali-revealed secret area, which, in my opinion, can add a real boost to the interactivity of any map. Complaints include: some textures which didn't quite blend in with their surroundings (the blood splattered on the wall), a difficult to enter tunnel in the water area, and a misaligned brush or two. A bit more action, and less linear gameplay would also have been nice. And finally, there were several entities which I could walk right through, most notable: a railing inside the main Keep. All told, this is an ambitious and good quality map, and a recommended download.
